The beginning of 2026 brought with it a moment that stopped time, if only briefly — the sighting of a newborn elephant calf on Nambiti Private Game Reserve.
While we only saw the calf a few days into the new year, its arrival was clearly recent. Small, unsteady, and kept closely hidden by the herd, it was obvious this was a life only just beginning.
The First Glimpses
The first sighting of the calf was brief. The herd kept it well concealed, allowing only a short glimpse.
During our second sighting, on a game drive with guide Marli, we were fortunate to see the little one again — this time more clearly. The calf remained completely surrounded by close family members, never more than a step away from protection.
When it attempted to walk, it was visibly unsteady, stumbling and falling as it learned to balance on new legs. Each time it went down, the herd responded immediately. Adults moved in, checking on the calf, creating space and shielding it.
One moment stood out above the rest. The calf’s grandmother stepped forward, helping it back onto its feet before walking alongside it, gently guiding it down the road. She stayed close — calm and steady — ensuring the calf could keep moving.
The herd approached slowly. Guests and Marli watched in quiet awe as generations moved together — patient, deliberate, and deeply connected. The photograph captured in this moment is not one of perfection, but of reality: a tiny calf, unsure on its feet, supported by its family.
Life Continuing, Season After Season
Wildlife moments at Nambiti don’t just happen by chance.
Welcoming seven cheetah cubs in 2025 — the first born here in 13 years — and now seeing a newborn elephant in early 2026 shows us, first-hand, the impact of the hard work, care, and dedication of our reserve management team. These special moments are the result of ongoing protection and conservation.
At Elephant Rock Lodge, moments like these are never promised — and that is what makes them meaningful. There is no staging.
Being present for the first days of this calf’s life meant keeping our distance. Watching quietly.
